Maryland State Inspections

Pre-purchase Inspection

Purchasing a used vehicle can be risky. When excited buyers get emotionally caught up in the vehicle purchase, they often miss mechanical, cosmetic, and safety issues during visual inspections and test drives. These problems are compounded if the vehicle being purchased is located in another city and is purchased prior to being seen in person. To eliminate much of the anxiety and get an accurate picture of the condition of the vehicle, many buyers choose to have a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) done before the sale is final.  The report allows you to find out information about your purchase that you might not have known about just by visually looking at your potential purchase.

Contact S.M.C. Services before you buy any used car, truck or motorcycle. Our technicians will perform an unbiased bumper-to-bumper inspection and report on the condition of the vehicle you are planning to buy. We evaluate all of the major operating systems of the vehicle, test drive the vehicle and provide you with an easy-to-read report – making sure you fully understand each point of the evaluation.

We do not recommend or discourage your car purchase; we just give you the facts. You will have a better idea of the condition of your prospective vehicle, bumper-to-bumper. Buyers can use our report to keep from buying a lemon; sellers can use our unbiased report as a sales tool. Remember that the purpose of a pre-purchase inspection is not to repair but to provide an impartial vehicle inspection and helping you to make an educated buying decision. We can also include a Maryland State Inspection Certificate for an additional fee.

When should I get a PPI?

A pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended BEFORE purchasing a vehicle. When there is no warranty, the buyer is immediately assuming all the risk in the event of a breakdown or major mechanical issue. For this reason, a qualified PPI makes financial sense.

Where can I get a PPI?

A pre-purchase inspection can be done by any competent mechanic or automotive technician who understands the vehicle you are purchasing. Automobile dealerships and independent specialty shops are excellent resources for a thorough PPI, and they will be familiar with the process. S.M.C. Services does provide pre-purchase inspections.

What should be inspected?

Unfortunately, there isn’t an industry-wide accepted standard or schedule for a PPI. The cost of the inspection generally determines the depth and detail of the inspection. A basic inspection will be mostly visual, which includes putting the car on a lift and checking for leaks or broken components. A more involved inspection will include a detailed road test where components such as steering and brakes can be assessed. A thorough inspection will include checking engine compression and a computer engine analysis at an additional charge.

At S.M.C. Services, you will receive a detailed pre-purchase inspection report that includes the following information on your potential purchase:

  • Exterior scratches, dings, dents, chips, rust, and paint on the entire car
  • All vehicle glass
  • Tires and wheels
  • Drive train and shaft
  • Oil leaks, exhaust leaks, belts, fluid leaks, hoses, radiator and more underhood issues
  • Electrical system
  • Manual transmission
  • Automatic transmission
  • Brake system
  • Dashboard controls
  • Condition of Engine and Transmission
  • Heating, Cooling, and A/C System
  • Fuel Injection System
  • Condition of Starter, Alternator, and Battery
  • Previous Accident Damage, Interior Water Leaks
  • Neglected Maintenance and Condition of Fluids
  • Operation of Power Accessories
  • On-Board Computer & Ignition Problems

What is the cost of a pre-purchase inspection?

At SMC Services, a complete inspection would cost $129.95.

The used car I am purchasing already has been Maryland Inspected do I still need a pre-purchase inspection?

The PPI tells you more about the OVERALL CONDITION of the vehicle and not just whether or not your vehicle meets Maryland State Safety Standards.

I would like to get a pre-purchase inspection but I also need a Maryland State inspection. Do I need to pay for both?

No, at your request we can complete the additional paperwork that is required by the state of Maryland and issue a certificate of inspection to obtain title and tags for an additional fee.

How do I set up a pre-purchase Inspection?

Inspections usually take approximately 2.5 hours to complete. After you have selected the vehicle you wish to buy, call us at (410)573-9776 to schedule an appointment, one day in advance. Whether you buy your car from a licensed dealer or an individual, you can rest easy knowing your pre-purchase auto inspection is in capable, experienced hands.
